It really depends – both styles are required at different times, depending on what stage the organization is at.
You can only successfully go through periods of transformation if you first have a period of preparation and follow the changes with a period of consolidation. Transactional leadership is required in these ‘buffer’ periods.
Most long-term leaders are transactional, but are often forgotten. Many transformational leaders live and die by the sword.
