  • Where can I find a free contact management database application for a small charity organization?

Posted by admin on November 5th, 2009 and filed under organization management | 10 Comments »

There are a few free contact management applications out there but I’m looking for one that is very easy to use and can be adapted for a Canadian organization (i.e. can handle Candian postal codes). Ideally, the application can track names and contact information, produce reports, generate mailing lists, produce reciepts, letters, etc.

You can go on ebay and buy older versions of ACT! for almost nothing.

I found a place called 1 Computer Bargains which sells to charities really cheaply. You might check with them. Also Microsoft has a charity selling source, but your charity has to meet their standards.

get a list of local nonprofits in your area that might have similar needs… find out what they use!

For some local election campaigns, I found some freeware / shareware templates for MS access that worked great…. and QuickBooks has a decent (barely) contact manager that is easy to use.

Our charity uses Access, which is part of the Microsoft Office package. We started in 1997 and have distributed over $1.3 million using this database. It scales beautifully, but the user must be computer savvy.

I live in Canada and there are a few scheduling programs that you can download for free. Obviously you would have to research them to see if they meet all your needs. Some will provide part of what you need but not all.

I use Microsoft word – mail merger for generating mailing lists and letter writing.

Below is a link for freeware from Tucows.

      Hope this helps.

Contact local businesses with your request. Many people upgrade quite often and they may be willing to give you their old program. Good luck…

Google it. Spend a few minutes searching for "Freeware", "Contact database", "database", "addresses". Spend the next hour or so downloading and evaluating the software.
