To start with everything has to have a place. A box for your jewellery. A rack for your shoes. Bookcases. Things like that.

Then you have to put things back in their place. Every single time you use them. It only takes a few seconds & it saves you hours n the long run.

Thirdly, get rid of junk. If you haven't worn it in 12 months give it to a charity. If it's broken, throw it out. Don't think Oh, I'll fix that one day. Doesn't happen. Clean out your pantry, out of date food, bye bye.

Fourth, have a clean up once a week or once a fortnight where you vacuum, mop, clean the toilet that sort of thing. Once things are spick & span you will have that much more motivation to keep them that way.
References :
Experience

I used to have this problem but thanks to my husband I am over-coming it.
Remember that everything needs a place. I tend to pile things that I plan to get to eventually, then they just sit there and the stack continually gets bigger!
What I did was get a filing cabinet to keep that stuff in. It's fun to keep, and sometimes I'll go through it.
I also have one box that is a "to be filed".
When going through mail I stand next to the garbage can to throw away the junk emmedietly instead of "later".

Also, a real excellent website in helping to organize and stay clean and clutter-free is http://www.flylady.com
I HIGHLY recommend this site. Besides my husband, this has been the biggest help for me!

Good luck!
(PS stop piling!) ;)
