Amitabha Sadangi, an uncommon hero tackling poverty in India

Posted by admin on March 31st, 2010 and filed under organization development | 25 Comments »

Meet Amitabha Sadangi, a businessman who gave up wealth and fortune to tackle irrigation and poverty in India.

Amitabha Sadangi’s vision is to empower the rural poor with affordable, sustainable agricultural technologies. He has been a leader in creating an Indian strategy and organization to disseminate technologies developed by International Development Enterprises (India).

Foot treadle irrigation pumps and low-cost drip systems introduced by IDE (India) have helped 400,000 families double their income, a net gain of more than $40 million per year. A signature element of the IDE (India) strategy is a “supply chain” of local manufacturers, distributors and installers who earn $1 million annually. IDE (India) has sold irrigation systems to the poorest families for as little as $1, enabling them to have more food and earn more money and, thus, afford better health care and education.

Cameroon is a safe Central African Republic bordered to the west by the Gulf of Guinea. One of the most diverse countries in Africa, Cameroon is often referred to as “Africa in miniature?. Cameroon has everything you would expect from the African continent; tropical rainforests, deserted golden beaches, great expanses of desert, vast lakes and savannah, and volcanic mountains in-between. Compared with other African countries, Cameroon enjoys political and social stability. Nevertheless, large numbers of Cameroonians live in poverty as subsistence farmers. The unemployment rate is high and those who are employed perform mostly agricultural tasks. The HIV/AID crises have hit hard especially the children, many of whom lack proper healthcare. Cameroon has one of the highest school attendance rates in Africa. Although attendance rates are high, there is a shortage of teacher leaving schools chronically understaffed. Cameroon is having two seasons that is the rainy and dry season; the rainy season runs from March to September while the dry season runs from October to February. The major spoken languages are still English and French but a multitude of more than 200 ethnic languages are also in circulation, with various tribes populating the country. Our programs are located in Buea and the surrounding rural towns where English is predominately spoken. The nearest airport from our head office is Douala International, about an hour drive from Buea. All participants should book their flights to Douala Airport. The volunteer program goal is to give international support to local organizations helping needy children and young people throughout south west Cameroon.

Equal Justice: the History of The Legal Aid Society

Posted by admin on February 18th, 2010 and filed under organization services | 1 Comment »

Equal Justice: the History of The Legal Aid Society, narrated by E.G.Marshall, tells the story of the founding of The Legal Aid Society in 1876 as the first organization in the country to offer free legal services to poor German immigrants. It traces the growth of The Legal Aid Society through the decades as services were extended to all New Yorkers in need of legal services and outlines the support the organization received from prominent figures such as Theodore Roosevelt, first as the New York City Police Commissioner and continued to his years as President of the United States and Charles Evans Hughes, a United States Supreme Court Justice, Governor of New York, and founder and partner of Hughes, Hubbard & Reed LLP. As New York City grew, so too did The Legal Aid Society and the scope of its work to include quality comprehensive representation in three major areas: Civil, Criminal and Juvenile Rights through individual representation and law reform advocacy.

Human Organization II – Islamic Fatalism and the Downfall of Human Development

Posted by admin on February 5th, 2010 and filed under organization development | 14 Comments »

Fatalism is the crutch to human development in every country – rich or poor.

Wheresoever ye may be, death will overtake you, even though ye were in lofty towers. Yet if a happy thing befalleth them they say: This is from Allah; and if an evil thing befalleth them they say: This is of thy doing (O Muhammad). Say (unto them): All is from Allah. What is amiss with these people that they come not nigh to understand a happening? [Qur'an 4:78]

When a person decides that divine powers have ultimate control of their lives, then they stop taking responsibility for changing their own lives or improving their own situation. Muslim people are the greatest source in human development today. If only they put more emphasis on education rather than religion, they would be able to create great technology and market that science to non-muslim people.

If Muslims put an end to fatalism – even if this means keeping their religion or leaving their religion behind – they would be able to develop wealth within their own communities.

Concordia Children’s Services, as a Christian organization, is responding to many situations of need, particularly to one important sector of our society – the less fortunate children of the Philippines. These are hapless children who are abandoned as a result of being born out-of-wedlock, broken marriages, extreme poverty, irresponsible attitudes and ignorance, the street children who most often have dysfunctional families and who are neglected and abused.
