COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES RAIDS DOG RESCUE GROUP
Over 60 Dogs Kept in Small Crates Inside Lakeside Home
Animal Control Officers from the County of Department of Animal Services executed a search warrant this morning on a rescue organization and found 60 dogs inside a residence on Moreno Avenue in Lakeside.
The dogs were being kept in crates that were stacked at least two high throughout the home and officers were told that the dogs were only let of the crates once a day. Many of the dogs have skin conditions, upper respiratory disease or other illnesses. In addition, most of the dogs have injuries to their feet and noses from trying to escape from their crates.
The animals are being triaged on site by veterinary staff to determine the level of injury or illness. After being evaluated, the animals will be transported to the three County animal shelters located in Carlsbad, Bonita, and San Diego for additional and continued care.
The operator of the rescue organization, Alice Via, was taken into custody at the scene and is facing numerous animal cruelty and neglect charges.
All of the animals will be treated and evaluated but will not be immediately available for adoption until the conclusion of the investigation.

WTO Forum – What is the role of WTO services rules in the context of the current financial crisis?
Proponents of open trade in services argue that the GATS, the General Agreement on Trade in Services, holds the potential to enhance efficiency and innovation around the world. But critics counter that market opening can also increase risks, especially in the financial system. Has the WTO’s services agreement contributed to the crisis or is it a tool which can help create a more stable environment for international financial services? Myriam Vander Stichele, senior researcher at the Amsterdam-based Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations, and Sergio Marchi, senior fellow at the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development, discuss this topic with Keith Rockwell, WTO Spokesperson.

Equal Justice: the History of The Legal Aid Society, narrated by E.G.Marshall, tells the story of the founding of The Legal Aid Society in 1876 as the first organization in the country to offer free legal services to poor German immigrants. It traces the growth of The Legal Aid Society through the decades as services were extended to all New Yorkers in need of legal services and outlines the support the organization received from prominent figures such as Theodore Roosevelt, first as the New York City Police Commissioner and continued to his years as President of the United States and Charles Evans Hughes, a United States Supreme Court Justice, Governor of New York, and founder and partner of Hughes, Hubbard & Reed LLP. As New York City grew, so too did The Legal Aid Society and the scope of its work to include quality comprehensive representation in three major areas: Civil, Criminal and Juvenile Rights through individual representation and law reform advocacy.

Many organizations, large and small, are attempting to control and prevent the spread of AIDS. These organizations reach out to individuals in the United States and elsewhere to assist.
Global organizations hold promise to bring worldwide attention to this devastating disease. The HIV/AIDS pandemic has affected over 60 million people in the world; 20 million people died of AIDS overall and in Africa it is the No. 1 cause of death.
Catholic Relief Services, with its headquarters in Baltimore, Md., is an international organization that works with partners in 100 countries throughout the world and strives to create an impact worldwide that will bring about new hope in the battles of hunger, war and disease along with other global struggles.
President Bush has developed an emergency plan for AIDS relief known as PEPFAR, President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief, which is the biggest initiative by any one country dedicated to HIV/AIDS.
Another major organization, The Global Fund, has committed itself to coordinating and providing 1.8 million people with antiretroviral treatment.. The Global Fund has distributed over $10.1 billion to over 136 countries in the world. This unique program will reach 62 million people in hopes that they will receive voluntary counseling and testing services for HIV prevention.
Every individual can make a difference. A local example of a single person finding a way to make change is Ryan Keith of Mechanicsburg, Pa., the founder and president of Forgotten Voices International. This organization relieves and assists the HIV/AIDS pandemic by funding local churches and community programs to help better serve nations in need.
